Mila Austin

Before she wrote fiction, Mila Austin wrote code: in the Soviet Union, she developed software for military defense systems. When perestroika came and many defense organizations closed, she moved to the IT department of a hospital. Her proposal to bring the Internet to government organizations won a nationwide competition in Belarus and received a grant from the Soros Foundation.

In 2000 she moved to the United States, where she studied business at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

She began writing in English in a college classroom, telling the story of the country she had left in short pieces for American classmates. Those stories grew into a screenplay that reached the semifinals of a screenwriting competition, and then into her first novel, Earrings for a Black Day, first published in 2010 and named a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Book Awards in 2011. Her book And Spring Comes follows her own journey through the Gestalt approach at Esalen, and is published in English and in Russian.

Mila lives in Monterey County, California, where she enjoys gardening and growing roses, traveling, and crocheting beautiful gifts for her friends and family.
